Take an online course with English-speaking professors.

This might be in your study field, a random skill you want to develop, or a topic you would like to explore deeply. Numerous websites offer well-executed courses for free! I use Edx.org. Why do I recommend this? Check below:

1 It builds confidence

Taking a virtual class, you will be part of readings, videos, audio content, and other types of engaging forms of study. During my readings, I was able to identify that the words I learned for my IELTS writing section were commonly used by native-English speakers. Following this further, if you are lucky you can be invited to a Facebook group of the same class, there you have more room to compare academic writing with different forms of interactions. For instance: during a digital marketing class I was invited to a group where I was supposed to share my homework in public. By doing that, I was able to compare the way I used to introduce my outcomes with other members.

2 Reinforce sentence variety

Since virtual classes usually have readings, it is easy to reinforce different types of sentence variety in addition to vocabulary.

3 It boosts your vocabulary level

It does not matter if the online course is data science, digital marketing, or electrical fundamentals. Professionals tend to use common connectors and phrases. And you would be surprised to notice terms that you would not pay attention to in the past. From my personal experience, some words were: Advocate, enable, appeal, seek, gather, articulate, footprint, streaming, holistic, misleading, and whilst. If you search a list of useful writing words for IELTS or TOEFL, you will notice some of those terms there. And an extra tip is that for writing you are supposed to adopt some professional words from those lists and own them. Following this further, you can fall in love with new words. A common IELTS type of question in writing is ‘’Advantages and disadvantages’’. Once, reading material from a virtual class I read the phrase ‘’The positive aspects outshine the unintended consequences’’ I fell in love with the term ‘’Outshine’’ which is formal, uncommon in my writing, and easy to remember.

4 It fosters your idea’s bank

Of course and unfortunately, if the course is in agronomy techniques probably you will be elevating your vocabulary level and ideas only in the environmental IELTS topic. However, this is still one of the benefits of taking online classes, and if you think about it, for the speaking section you are inclined to connect your study field or new learnings at some point. To clarify, particularly before the speaking section you think about how to talk about your job, your study field, diverse experiences, and if you recently had an e-learning experience that is always something to talk about. Maybe, they will not ask you common questions (it is always unexpected, right?) But! you will not feel empty before the test.

5 It breaks cultural barriers without traveling

If you are taking the IELTS test probably you don’t belong to an English-speaking country. Thus, you are more likely to feel shy in front of an English-speaking evaluator. By taking online classes and interacting with ordinary professors, your natural fear of the unknown will decrease. From my experience, recently I was taking a marketing class and one of the professors didn’t look visually appealing. Her pose was not right, her outfit looked dated, she was looking down notes during the video recording, and For someone trying to sell a marketing course, this was not appropriate for me. However, it makes me notice we are all human beings, we are not perfect, and we should feel more comfortable with each other.

In conclusion! if you have time during your weekend or any weekday, take an English-speaking free online course and probably you will kill two birds with the same stone!

And remember! the best way to learn is by doing something that you love. It is clever to practice as much as you can, but! trick your mind with different activities while still, you are training the same muscle.

PS: If you put into practice the tip above, remember to take notes and at the end of your course, check those terms you liked and ideas you built.
