What are the possible effects of longer living for individuals and society?

#IELTS Tested on January 2021

In numerous countries, surveys have shown that human beings are living longer. However, having an increased number of senior citizens in diverse societies has outcomes proper to discuss. Below we will explore the implications for elderly citizens in societies and for the individuals as human beings with needs and feelings.

On the one hand, societies with a higher rate of senior citizens should pay special attention to their public services. Aging in life implies a higher tendency to acquire diseases, due to a reduced immune system. Since physical strength decreases people move slower and lose the freedom to perform certain basic activities by themselves. Hence, nurses specializing in elderly care are in high demand. As cross-cultural awareness of an increased population of senior citizens grows, nations should pay attention to healthcare, transportation, infrastructure, equal rights for job opportunities, and even education. To clarify, affordable health insurance for elders can help them with their current health needs; public transportation can be offered with lower price tickets to them; buildings should be built with facilities for senior citizens, and we need to educate the younger ones to try to reduce understanding barriers.

On the other hand, individuals living late in life need to be treated with love and respect. We could think about a plethora of issues due to the unfair treatment towards elderly individuals as an effect of lack of education and values. Self-love should be cultivated and spread to others. By teaching self-love people will learn to take care of themselves, reducing the possibilities of many aging-health problems. Likewise, love is a value that cultivates respect. While some people are aging in life and dealing with new depressing circumstances, younger individuals should be caring and supportive. A recent study by the University of British Columbia showed that 4 out of 10 senior individuals committed suicide due to depression. This fact can be taken to understand why loving others has a wellness impact in our communities.

In conclusion, nations with an increased number of aging individuals should adjust their public services to protect all the stages of their societies. Nevertheless, educating people to treat others with love is a nation-building strategy to maintain a healthy society.
